Capital letters in nicknames

nuxma: What do you think about capital letters in nicknames? There is an opinion that the first letter must be a capital letter and the rest must be small. On the other hand I've found this statement: "nicknames starting with capital letters say about your superiority complex". Personally I consider that nicks based on proper names look better with caps and sometimes a nick has a sense only with small letters. All in all it's a matter of taste.

Liliana: I am afraid that those who speak about someone's superiority complex in case like you described, experience inferiority complex themselves. What a trifle it is to capitalize your nick or not. I personally don't care if someone writes my real name with a small letter. It's what you are and what you do that matters, but not your name.

Elena Geiko: I personally can compare it to handwriting - to make a name more personalized we write letters with different flourishes, and to make a nickname unique we change the look of the letters. By the way, graphologists say we can tell a person's character by their handwriting, so there must be similar principles connected with typing.

Jane RR): I also think capitalising someone's name one can express their respect towards them. Isn't it true for 'virtual' communication as well?

nuxma: I'm not sure it can express respect. Let's see it from the other side: there is a big difference between the name and the nickname. We create nicks by ourselves, it's our choice and it's unique (at least in a part of the Internet). If the name is written in an unusual way it will be just breaking the rules but if the nickname is concerned it might hurt a person who wrote his/her nick in a certain way.

Jane RR): Well, you are definitely right to say so. I totally agree that it's up to the AUTHOR to choose the way of writing their nickname or whatever.
